Tom Robinson Band
The Tom Robinson Band emerged on the scene just as British Punk was taking over the world. Though not nearly as popular as many of those bands, the TRB frequently played with X-Ray Spex and the Clash, often at concerts fighting racism. Their second album contained “(Sing if You’re) Glad to Be Gay,” which quickly became the anthem of LGTBQ+ folks, and remains popular to this day. Hearing such a song on the radio was jarring and comforting, and certainly ahead of its time.
