Keith Haring
Keith Haring’s name is less familiar than his artwork. His childlike chalk-outline drawings were spray painted all over New York City in the early 1980s, when graffiti was prevalant. He befriended Andy Warhol, who promoted his work widely, and Madonna, who continues to talk about him and his influence on her. He was an ardent activist for the LGBTQ+ community, and an early fighter for AIDS victims when care was spotty and the FDA didn’t seem to be in a rush to help. Sadly, just as his star was rising, he died of AIDS himself in 1980.
