B-52's

Picture
The Athens, GA scene that so benefitted the folk rock likes of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls in the 1980s  really got started with the B-52s in the late 1970s. A brother and sister with three friends created a new sound that went beyond comprehension. Their mix of spoken word, perfect harmonies, catchy hooks and ridiculous lyrics were so powerful, their first single, "Rock Lobster" was cited by John Lennon as the sole reason he began recording again. Four of the five members identify as LGBTQ+, and Cindy Strickland, who does not, lost her brother, Keith, to AIDS in 1982.
