Ani DiFranco

Picture
The apotheosis of the self-made artist, DiFranco created her own record company when she was 19. She is known for writing brilliant songs in almost every genre. She began as a fan of Woody Guthrie, and was invited to play at his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has an ever - widening fan base around the world, and her ardent followers who love her honesty and her politics. She is a big supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, and has, at times, identified as straight, gay and bisexual (thought she hates the word). Her own shifting sexuality as she has grown is common, if not often discussed. Her clarity and honesty about her sexuality speaks to a members of a culture who often stay mum on the topic. She has also been active in women’s rights, particularly when it comes to abortion rights.
This year she was seen on Broadway in the smash hit Hadestown and released a memoir. Her flexibility and productivity have only cemented her place in history, and has inspired all those artists who make their own rules.
